Coding for Malpractice Cases
Speaker – Dee Buckley CPC, Claims Coding Specialist

The purpose of presentation is to illustrate different uses of traditional coding in a non-traditional setting.  Examples will be presented to explain how ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure codes differ in the two coding worlds.

Unlike the outpatient coder who assigns codes for every condition the patient presents with,  I only assign a diagnosis code for the one condition that brings patient to physician.  The next code is assigned for condition that results in a malpractice claim (in other words the bad outcome of treatment).  ICD-9 procedure codes & CPT codes are also assigned.  No E/M codes are used.
